Needs: Nisus(R) Writer version 4.0 or 4.01 (You can tell which version you have by selecting the NisusWriter icon in the Finder and choosing Get Info from the Edit menu.) Description: This is an updater which will convert Nisus Writer 4.0 or 4.01 to 4.06. Version 4.06 includes many bug fixes and performance enhancements, and all users of 4.0 or 4.01 are encouraged to update their copies.
Included in the Stuffit(tm) archive is a list of the changes in version 4.06. If you have version 4.03 or 4.05, you must instead use the updater named NisusWriter 4.03/05–>4.06.sit. Version 4.06 New “Features” (very minor!)
General
1 The “Control Key Activates Balloon Help” feature is now a preference you can turn off (under Editing Preferences).
2 There are keyboard equivalents for Find Text Only and Replace Text Only.
WorldScript support (Applies only if you have the appropriate System Extension(s))
3 Added most every item in the “Find/Replace” menu to the Searching Preferences dialog. Thus, you can control whether Ignore Diacriticals, Script Sensitive, etc, are on at startup.
4 Nisus Writer now remembers the last used font in each script and makes that the default font for typing in that script. That is most useful when creating stationery files that need to remember a default font for more than one script.
5 Nisus Writer now supports Russian “Smart Quotes”.
6 Added a Russian spelling dialog for the Russian spelling checker.
7 There is now an option in the Editing Preferences dialog when the Hebrew Script is available called “Enable Hebrew Ligatures”. When turned off, Hebrew files will read in significantly faster than when turned on. However, there are some rare circumstances where a line could contain a significant number of ligatures and if that line is in certain fonts on the Hebrew System, the line will not break at the right spot. These are actually due to a bug in that particular font, but Nisus Writer has a workaround. Turning this option on turns on the workaround, but makes reading in of files much slower.
Changes from Previous Releases (U.S. Versions)
Version 4.01 changes from 4.0:
1 The 24 bit problem (which involved the comparing of data) was fixed.
2 There was a rarely occurring random crash due to Nisus Writer’s internal memory manager which was fixed.
3 There was a problem with highlighting editions (using Publish/Subscribe) which was fixed.
Version 4.03 changes from 4.01:
1 No more Internal Compression! The AIC Internal Compression is no longer used on Nisus® Writer (application) or any other Nisus Writer file. The compression was contributing to random crashes).

General
1 Made macros slightly faster.
2 Fixed Append Copy bug which duplicated Defined Styles.
3 Made event loop give Nisus Writer more time when it was in the foreground.

General/Misc.
1 Fixed problem causing Nisus Writer to hang on startup on some systems.
2 Nisus Writer is much faster about memory management in many cases.
3 The Claris filters are no longer installed loose in the Claris folder. We now install them in a Claris Translators Folder (but this applies only to the new installer, not to the patch available on various on–line services).
4 Disk thrashing in low memory situations was fixed.
5 There were some “quitting” bugs that were fixed. The code was reworked to fix the following bugs:
a. If you had floating palettes showing, and chose “Restart” from the Finder, the floating palette positions were forgotten. This was a general bug and does not relate to floating palettes specifically.
b. If Nisus Writer had a Modal dialog up front (or it was waiting for user interaction so it could bring a modal dialog up front), and the user chose Restart from the Finder, Nisus Writer would crash.
6 Nisus Writer now removes the “virtual” NisusWriterTmpPref file, so the System doesn’t get cluttered.
7 The “Windows” menu now lists all open windows created by Nisus Writer. It puts the document windows first, and follows that up with the other windows (Catalog, Clipboard, Macros, Glossary, etc.).
8 Sometimes, “hard–coded” macros would crash. This was fixed.
9 If you have the FAX printing INIT, sometimes Nisus Writer would crash. (This is a bug in the FAX printing INIT, but at least Nisus Writer corrects for it now).
10 Remove Gremlins now displays an appropriate dialog when nothing is found.
11 When you choose “Gloss”, “Keep on same line” is now the preset option (until the user changes it).
12 Fixed problem in which an inserted equation would be “squashed” if user chooses Undo then Redo after inserting it.
13 Fixed bug with floating tool bars not letting a new document display its styles.
14 Fixed a bug with floating tool bars when a page layout window gets closed and the window behind it does not get activated.
15 Fixed crashing bug with publishers in a renamed but not saved document.
16 Fixed crashing bugs and other anomalies with the Thesaurus window due to the pop–up menu selections. Also, fixed bug in which choosing Thesaurus on any machine without Color QuickDraw would cause that machine to crash.
17 “Invisible Text” no longer takes up space if it is on a line that is fully justified.
18 The Dictionary Preferences... dialog can now be moved.
19 The positions of the Catalog and Clipboard window are now saved. Also, the initial positions of those two windows and the ASCII windows are more suitable for the particular screen you use rather than always appearing for the smallest possible screen.
Graphics
1 If you import a graphic that has some text in it, Nisus Writer now assumes it has no background rather than a white background.
2 The fill pattern and color and fill mode did not read in properly for Text Boxes on the graphics layer. For example, saving a file with these, and then opening the file, would produce a different graphic. Also, copying a Text Box and pasting it elsewhere would change the graphic. These problems have been fixed.
3 If you import a graphic that has some text in it, and the text is an ASCII character that is above code 128, then Nisus Writer will now make the Text Box big enough to accommodate the character.
4 The fill pattern and color and fill mode now read in properly for Text Boxes on the graphics layer. For example, saving a file with these, and then opening the file, would produce a different graphic. Also, copying a Text Box and pasting it elsewhere would change the graphic. This has been fixed.
5 Fixed several problems involving incorrect grouping of graphics.

7 There is no longer unnecessary “flashing” of graphics that are being displayed the first time.
8 Fixed problem causing inserted character graphic to be ignored when window was closed quickly.
9 Fixed incorrect placement of pasted graphics attached to paragraphs.
10 If you have a bunch of text with fixed line spacing, and you have a page–fixed graphic near the bottom of a page, but not enough to fit another line below it, then you will no longer find the next line (the one that starts the next page after the graphic) slightly above the top of that page.
11 The display of graphic anchors now shows up for graphics that are behind the text.
12 In a “Graphics For...” window, if you select a graphic, and then choose “Duplicate”, the vertical offset is no longer ignored.
Headers/Footers/Footnotes
1 Fixed problem causing crash if you had footnotes, but no headers of footers, and the footnote contained a page number.
2 In Nisus Writer, you can now cross reference to a footnote number like you could in Nisus 3.4.
3 When you insert a footnote in Nisus Writer the first time, Nisus Writer uses 5/6 of the currently selected font for the initial text in the footnotes window. Nisus Writer also places a TAB character before the number. This is the way Nisus used to work too. However, after the first footnote was inserted, any subsequent footnotes inserted “borrow” the font/size/style and the ruler of the neighboring footnote. It also leaves out the TAB character if the user deleted the TAB character from the neighboring footnote. Thus, new footnotes are more likely to be inserted the way the user wanted them.
4 If you have more text in footnotes than in the main document (that is, there are more actual characters in the footnote window), and the last footnote contains a page number counter near the end, Nisus Writer no longer crashes when you view the footnotes.
5 Sometimes, page numbers would be off by one (or more) pages. In particular, all page numbering in the “endnotes” would show the same number even when there was many pages of endnotes. This has been fixed.
6 Nisus Writer and Nisus 3.4 accidently used different (and contradictory) file formats to determine the format of the Footnote Symbols (such as whether they are Endnotes, or when the appearance of the numbering should be). The current version goes back to the Nisus 3.4 format for saving, but reads this information from a new, less corrupted, area in the file.
7 Nisus Writer used to always center justify headers and footers. Now, Nisus Writer uses the neighboring header/footer for the ruler and font style.
8 In the “info” bar on the left side, the line number (the number before the slash) was off by one on any other page than the first if that page contained a header. This has been fixed.
Counters/Numbering/Cross–Referencing
1 The Date Formats now supports using the Control Panel, rather than forcing the user to pick between British and European. The British/European settings are ignored for any other font than a Roman or European font.
2 Fixed problem causing crash if user created a file in Nisus Writer 4.0 using page number counters, then opened it in Nisus 3.4, then re–opened it in 4.0.
3 If you have a counter in your document, and you cross reference to that counter and then choose “Update Cross References”, all the counters would be off by one if that cross reference were put ABOVE the counter being cross referenced. This has been fixed.
Multiple Script Systems
1 Nisus Writer now remembers the last used font in each script and makes that the default font for typing in that script.
2 Nisus Writer now allows you to save a Nisus New File with specific font selections for multiple scripts.
3 When a line ended with an English word and the next line started with a Japanese word (or any script), a hyphen was inserted. We no longer insert the unwanted hyphen.
Asian Languages
1 Fixed a memory leak that caused Nisus Writer to gradually slow down when entering text in any Asian script that uses an input method.
2 Fixed bug causing strange behavior when command–space is used to switch scripts with some Asian input methods.
3 Nisus Writer now prints justified text properly in Chinese or Japanese.
4 Nisus Writer did not do the right thing in the “Reverse” style for Chinese or Japanese.
5 Nisus Writer now supports the 1–byte, 2–byte, and Roman items in the “Convert” menu for the Chinese script.
6 Added support for the American Heritage Dictionary, etc., for SoloWriter. We previously added these supports for Nisus 3.484, but now they are also available in Nisus Writer.
7 You could not enter Japanese Kanji text in the New Glossary Entry... dialog. This is because we reserved the Return and Enter keys as keys for dialog items, when you need these keys for Japanese entry.
8 When you select the English text typed with a Japanese font and open the Mark... dialog, Nisus Writer now puts the first three words into the dialog like it was supposed to.
9 The Japanese highlighting of inline text now looks like the System, rather than our own type of highlighting. Hence, we do not “box” text—we use underlines.
10 You could not type in Japanese in the “Save As...” dialog; now you can.
11 Nisus Writer crashed if the System script is Japanese and you select some text and choose “New Abbreviation”.
12 The “File–>File Access” submenu did not work properly in Japanese if you had any last–used files or essential files.
13 The Catalog did not display some items if the system script is Japanese.
14 If the user did NOT have the “tmTE INIT” in their Extensions folder, but they are were the Japanese system, and they chose Gloss... from the menu, they couldn’t type in Japanese. In fact, they could have this problem with ANY dialog, but people found this most important with Gloss. This is now fixed.
15 Nisus Writer did not measure Korean two–byte characters correctly; now it does.
Middle Eastern Languages
1 “Hebrew” page numbering no longer shows “garbage” in other fonts in Hebrew.
2 The Word Count dialog did not display correctly (some items were cut off) if you had either the Arabic or Hebrew scripts loaded on your system, but not both, and you did not have Japanese loaded on your system.
3 Page numbering in “AbgadHawaz” did not work at all if the System script was anything other than Arabic. The same applied for some other numbering systems. It should have been looking at the script of the font of the page number rather than the script of the System.
4 Hebrew text often did not display properly. The most obvious problem was that some paragraph breaks (“returns”) seemed “invisible”. They would not break the paragraphs. This has been fixed.
Known Problems:
1 The Catalan language module does not display certain words properly. Words with mid–points between double consonants (such as pampil·loma) display in the Check Spelling dialog with a box in place of the midpoint because the display font (Chicago) does not include this character (ASCII 225). Other fonts (Helvetica, Times) can display the midpoint.
2 We still have problems that appear on 68000 machines but may be due to lack of memory. We are working on this.
3 Files which were created in Word 6.0 and saved as Word 5.0/5.1 files may not import correctly; this appears to be due to a problem with Word’s export function.
4 When certain monitors (and video RAM cards) are set to display in “Thousands” of colors (in the Monitors control panel), and you choose a “Highlight color” other than “Black & White” (from your Color control panel), Nisus Writer still only highlights in black.
5 A problem, unresolved by Apple Computer, in the built–in (Read Only Memory or “ROM”) on Quarda 660AV (and possibly other AV) machines affects recording multiple sounds.
6 If you use System 7.5 with QuickDraw GX your equations will display on screen but will not print. You can remove QuickDraw from your System to print equations until this problem is resolved.
7 On some PowerBooks (Duo 270c, 500 series, possibly others), the battery indicator reads lower than the actual amount.

We have posted a new patch to update QUED/M 2.7.x in the Nisus Software Library.
The following bug fixes and new features were added to QUED/M 2.7.2:
1. CodeWarrior Error Reporting
QUED/M now reports all compile/link errors/warnings in a QUED/M messages window. Simply double-click the error to open the corresponding source file with the line in question selected. You must be using CodeWarrior 1.2 found on CW5 to use this feature.
2. "CW Run With Debugger" command has been added. Hold the Option key while selecting "CW Run" to have CodeWarrior lauch the Metrowerk's debugger when running an application.
3. Balloon Help was updated for QUED/M 2.7.2.
4. The "QUED/M CodeWarrior Instructions" document was updated to describe the new CodeWarrior commands found in QUED/M 2.7.2.
